We are seeking a Senior DevOps Engineer to join our DevOps team in downtown San Diego. Our DevOps team is small with 2 engineers and of course we are looking to add a third. Like many growing companies we continue to operate legacy systems while transitioning to more modern architecture to facilitate our continued growth. We currently operate our own physical servers at a local datacenter for 90 of our needs and use some Amazon and Google Cloud services. We migrating applications to newer technologies like Kubernetes and Docker and have started some automation using Ansible, but a big part of the work load is managing our legacy systems. Our perfect candidate will be a self-starter, a top notch trouble shooter, and a Linux expert. Our successful candidate will also have experience with Jenkins, Kubernetes, Docker and Ansible. Database experience is also a big plus. Our databases include MongoDB, MySQL, Ceph and Elasticsearch. What You Will Be Doing Our core infrastructure is self-hosted and heavy relies on open source toolstechnologies such as KVM, Linux (CentOS), Ceph. New initiatives follow a container first policy and utilize cloud-based services centered around GCP and Kubernetes. As the SREDevOps manager you should be able to understand the complexities surrounding such systems and effectively manage workloads that span them. Responsibilities Maintain a hybrid environment across datacenter and public cloud infrastructure Manage our servers running Nginx, Apache, PHP-FPM, and various other services Manage our databases running on MySQL, MongoDB, Redis, and ElasticSeatch Manage and improve deployments across multiple development teams Service attack surface minimizationhardening Implement vulnerability assessment automation Implement monitoring to ensure reliability and performance meets or exceeds business goals Work closely with engineers to assist in the reproduction and resolution of defects What You Need for this Position 5+ years experience in a DevOps role Understanding of deployment tools such as Ansible, Salt, Jenkins Understanding of cloud technologies such as GCPAWS and Kubernetes Ability to work closely with other engineers, product managers and customer support Ability to work in a dynamic and agile environment with tight deadlines Positive, 'can do' attitude with a focus on the success of the team over individual successes Bonus Understanding of web development technologies including PHP 7, MySQL, HTML, CSS, Javascript, Angular and a familiarity with using Perl as a scripting language If this brief description of our company and the position is of interest we would ask that you answer the questions below to move the process along. 1. Describe your experience with Linux and command-line interfaces. How confident are you in your ability to diagnose and resolve issues without the assistance of GUI tools? 2. Describe at least one experience in which you had to inherit a legacy infrastructure that needed to be maintained in its existing state, particularly where it involved self-direction and problem solving on your part. This may include, but is not limited to, using software with which you are unfamiliar or the reverse-engineering custom-written software to learn its functionality. 3. Related to the previous question, describe an example of a legacy platform you were able to improve upon or migrate to a modern platform in real time with little interruption to public-facing services. 4. Describe at least one large scale disaster scenario you have successfully mitigated on short notice. This may include, but is not limited to, abuse, DDoS events, hardware failure, or failed redundancy mechanisms. 5. Describe the architecture for a typical web application, from the front end user all the way to the back end application. This may include stacks you have encountered in the past as well as your ideal architecture for reliability and scalability. 6. In a client server application model, if a client is unable to connect to a service, how would you rule out a networking problem (routing, firewall rule, etc.) and diagnose the issue? 7. What is your experience with BGP routing and when would you use it? What is your experience with load balancing mechanisms in general? Under what scenarios would you use anycast IP advertisement over layer 7 load balancing? 8. What are your compensation package expectations? 9. How soon would you be available to start?
